Whisker Dreams | A small business with a big goal.
When trying to work on the idea of Whisker Dreams, I wanted to form a business that hit the following criteria:
- Use my artistic abilities and keep in contact with the vendors I have used over my career.
- Focus on cats and the joy they bring.
- Find a way to better the lives of cats and cat families
I dive deeper into my thought process below, but the shortened version is:
Sell cat based stationery, accessories, and home goods to celebrate the feline family we get to have in our lives, while helping raising funds to find a cure for the disease FeLV, Feline Leukemia.
I donate 5% of all profits to the EveryCat Health Foundation's Cancer and Oncology research fund to help find a cure for FeLV and diseases like it.
Summed up, I have developed the following catch phrase:
"Crafting cats, smiles, and cures together!"
Check out my "Mews" Blog where I highlighted the first year of my business, and called out interesting sales details and reviews!
Year two has come to a close and It was SO exciting! I 3x my sales from last year and donations were so much greater!!
What got me to this point?
Truth be told, I needed a change.
Please enjoy reading this really experimental approach on how this business came to be! I wanted to show my thought process.
I took some time to ask myself the following questions:
"If you could do any type of work, what would you like to do?"
Product design, Vendor negotiations, Promotion Collaborations, event/expo planning and execution, and improve lives & explore experiences in some way- even if it could be momentarily. I always thought it would be liberating to run my own business. Launching and running an Online Store was something I was completely comfortable with as well and was open to the thought!
"Where do you see a problem that you could help with solving?"
One of the biggest pains I recently experienced was when I had adopted my two very first cats, Bandit and Ghost, in 2020 and they were shortly diagnosed with FeLV. I could barely find anything on this disease that was consistent. As a new cat parent, I was grasping at straws to find an understanding, and felt that very few people in the vet industry knew much about FeLV, or were very poor at explaining it to a person who has an average education in health.
"How will your idea help (others/the environment/in general)?"
Beyond the large wish of wanting to cure the cat cancer that is FeLV, I saw that here was space here to help find information that I was struggling to gather and verify as a cat parent. There was a lack of studies that I could find about FeLV that were recent and sadly felt disappointed with the items I found to help create memorials for my cats, and wanted to help address these gaps.
I have always found comfort with information, and when I was challenged with trying to understand something as big as my cats' health and prognosis while having no medical background, I wished I had something to read which broke this situation, disease, and "Next steps" down to a more basic standard.
I also wanted to find a way to help others survive the grief that they may feel while dealing with the loss of their cat family.
That's when I felt a wave of comfort hit me, and I said,
"This is it! This is where I can help!"
Finding my Brand
I had to consider my resources that I had, and also the physical space that was available to me. I would have to be running this business from inside my home, and my family needed to be able to live in it too. So I started researching ways that I could accomplish this method, and the licenses involved.
I have always enjoyed the idea of selling physical goods, and figured that a mixture of Drop-Shipping items and shipping small products would be the way to start! I drew a few designs that I felt were good products to start with and were what I wanted to see more of in the world. Then I started gathering quotes from some of my long time contact vendors to get a feel of costs and a budget I wanted to stick with.
Then before I ordered anything, I knew I needed to establish the following: A Brand and Logo.
This part was challenging and also so SO fun! I brainstormed so many key words and phrases that matched what I wanted to convey with this business.
After lots of deliberation I narrowed it down, and started looking online for availability.
Ultimately I wanted the logo to be known by the design first, then text last. Just like how the Nike checkmark Logo works! I felt that this would be the best case to work with in the off chance that I would need to pivot from my decided company name.
This is also why when the space for print is condensed the "Whisker Dreams" text is the part that is dropped off or truncated.
The focus on the business is to highlight cats and not profits.

Why does the single color Logo have the heart filled in black while the cat is simplified?
There are multiple reasons for this decision:
1. Beyond the fact that I have my own cat, Roll, as the inspiration for the Logo design, I wanted to emphasize that love is heart of this all. It doesn't need to be Roll as the known famous cat, as long as the message of love for your cats/chosen family is understood. The fully colored heart makes it stand out in the design.
2. I also felt that the Black heart being hugged showed a sign of embracing the heartache that possibly other cat parents might have from loosing their loved one, and hope that the goal of raising awareness and talking about the challenges that come our way can help! Just sending hugs and healing.
What am I going to sell?
I wanted to focus on the types of items I've always enjoyed seeing at trade shows and wanted to explore with my vendors that I've developed a relationship with over the years. This means my main mediums would be metal works, handcraft, wood works, and print media for now. However I really hope I could move into the soft-lines development of plush toys. I greatly enjoyed this avenue of product when I worked on the Lil' Plush series in my previous role at NIS America.
Here are some drafts -> sketches -> final works I will be selling below:

Pop Up Markets & Conventions
I wanted to attend pop up markets as well to continue exercising my event planning and booth building still. I always loved going to events and found it to be revitalizing, and also my mother had attended craft shows when I was a kid. It was a big bitter sweet moment when I got to set up and run my own booth in March.
Thanks, Mom, for the inspiration!

First time at the LBX location in the main pathway!
The Food was great and the people were excited to get the candy I was handing out! It was a little slow at first but better than I expected in the end! Wore Elf ears for the market and it was fun seeing who noticed.

This was the first time I had to pack up early at a market due to weather! It started to rain at 4:00 PM so we packed up and headed out. However, even though I had to pack up 1 hour early the sales at this location were one of my best! The adjustment of sticking Cat companions around my booth really helped people see them more!

I was a little nervous that this location might not perform so well since there was no natural traffic for this pop up event, however Creative Babe did a great job bringing people over to the beautiful location and we were able to have a great market, and the DJ was not too loud. I also had a nice additional bench along the back of my booth which was great for resting and storing my products.

10 x 10 table display!
This was my first December Market and I was inside the OC fairgrounds, and debuted my winter suncatchers here. I learned very quickly that when you attend a family focused as the "Bluey" themed event, you will see a lot of young families. This was not my main target audience and sales did not perform as well.

I did a 3 hour pop up at a small local brewery and was extremely surprised by how generous and kind people were at this location! I decided to switch up my display a little more a this location, and my coasters were a great hit! Who knew that holidays + a brewery were going to make them move! I sold 3 sets which was a lot more than expected and was extremely grateful. I will be back!

I attended the second Angels Stadium pop up event that Creative Babe Market held this year! I was stationed at what I thought was the back of the market but instead ended up being very close to the only entrance and exit! I had received my "Mini Whiskers" lapel pins the day before and made a quick way to sell them. They were one of my best sellers at the market! I also made a new Cat Companion display to use and I think it turned out great!

The longest market of the year, and was the best in pop up gross sales. I attended the SoCal Etsy Guild pop up market in The Paseo in Pasadena. It was a requirement to have white tablecloths going to the floor and umbrellas were required to be white as well. I ended up renting their umbrella and I'm glad I did! Even though I am not sure where the traffic was coming from, there were pretty consistent people just passing by this small mall. Overall sales were great, and ended my 2024 year strong in markets!
